ARTIST STATEMENT

Anne Kullaf builds her paintings the way a sculptor builds a wall: layer by layer, with a palette knife instead of a brush. Thick ridges of oil paint catch the light and cast their own small shadows across the canvas, so the surface itself has texture you can almost feel before you register what's being depicted. Color is applied in bold, deliberate strokes, often left unblended, so that a field of wildflowers or a city skyline reads as a mosaic of distinct, physical marks rather than a smooth illusion.

Light, in Kullaf's work, is always gentle. Even in a bustling cityscape or a wide, open landscape, she paints the way sun filters through late afternoon air, soft and forgiving, never harsh. It's a choice that reflects how she moves through the world: seeking out the calm amongst the noise and the quiet good in a given day.

This is less a technique than a philosophy. Kullaf believes that beauty is not something you have to travel far or wide to behold. It's omnipresent and always accessible. Her paintings are an invitation to slow down and to actively notice it, to hold onto the feeling of inner peace, and to bring a bit more of that calm into the spaces we occupy.

Working primarily in oil, both in the studio and en plein air, Kullaf has spent the past several years developing her signature palette-knife style while living by this philosophy. She refined it while living in the American West, and continues that work today from her studio in Philadelphia.
